Health insurance plans?

Postby thunderclap » Sat, 19 Dec 2009 10:17:27 -0500

I am wondering if anyone here has opinions on a good health insurance plan they may have used and filed a claim for? I have looked at ~10 plans that seem good on paper but would be interested to know if anyone likes their plan after filing a claim. For now, I am tending toward the StudentSecure plan. Appreciate any replies...

Thanks.

If you are going to be abroad for less than 1 year, usually travel insurance is enough. It's not the same as health insurance, and it's much cheaper. Mostly it covers you against any serious unforeseen problems you might have (including medical problems). But they will only take care of emergencies and maybe bring you home to continue your treatment.

International health insurance is another story. They are annual contracts that will truly cover your health costs. Here you have to be very careful with what you choose. Not because companies are rotten (although some are), but because there are no government subsidies and there are close to no means of going after people who abuse their policies. This is all reflected on the premiums (they are private companies looking for a profit after all).

The will respect their contracts, so you better know very well what you're getting yourself into. Seek advice from specialist (broker or agent) to find out what is best for you. Be careful of brokers based in your home country, they might not know much of the situation of international health care because it might be such a slight percentage of their business.

Asia (especially China) is the big market for international health and life insurance for individuals, so there are plenty of brokers based there (mostly HK and Singapore) who know the market pretty well. Some of them have kick ass websites that will offer you free quotes and answer any questions you might have. If you google international health insurance you'll find a whole bunch of websites. I won't say the one I use here because it violates Forum rules, but I'll give a heads up to my broker, so he can use the Advertising/Promotion section.
